Musculo-Skeletal Disorders
Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) are problems affecting the muscles, tendons and ligaments, nerves or other soft tissues and joints. The neck, back and upper limbs are particularly at risk. Symptoms including back ache, tennis elbow and carpal tunnel syndrome to name a few. The effects may be acute, resulting in severe pain or loss of movement, but in most cases there will be a gradual onset of symptoms which may start with tingling, swelling or soreness which will worsen.
MSDs can happen inside or outside the work environment they are often made worse by work activities. Hairdressing and beauty treatments involve repetitive activities and awkward postures which can lead to upper limb disorders. MSDs, can be very debilitating for those who suffer them. However, tackling them is often straightforward and can bring huge benefits for those affected.
You cannot prevent all MSDs so early reporting of symptoms, proper treatment and suitable rehabilitation is essential.
