Educator Training

Strand 3: Cascading Professional Development for Educators in Skill Gap Areas
Status: in development
Aims:
- To reduce skill gaps by increasing the number of educators with the required skills who can then also be used as assessors and verifiers in these specialist areas.
- To establish and maintain a register and network of these educators to encourage them to continue to develop their skills and ensure that they cascade their skills to other providers in their region as a condition of participation.
The same concept will be applied to each of the skill gap areas below and could be extended to future skills gaps. Specialists with recognised expertise in the skill gap areas will be identified and used to assess and, train where necessary, educators from prospective Centres of Excellence wherever possible.
These will then cascade their updated skills to educators to their learners, other staff in their centre and to other learning providers in their region, who will then cascade their learning to learners in their centres - a kind of chain reaction.
The concept will be adapted to suit the needs of each skills gap eg in terms of numbers, geographical spread, balance between assessment of existing educators with no/minimal training needs and full up skilling programmes.
Development process:
- Identify specialists in each skill gap area using industry contacts, skills team members, standards and qualification development group members etc
- Hold development sessions with specialists to agree participant and prospective Centre of Excellence selection criteria for the skill gap area; training syllabuses and success criteria; develop learning materials, drawing on NOS, qualifications and existing learning materials; agree schedule; agree number of subsidised places.
- Invite applications from individuals and prospective Centres of Excellence based on self assessment against the criteria
- Sift applications; select and notify participants; handle responses and follow up offers to fill places for first tranche
- Develop web areas for participants to share development between training sessions and maintain contact with the co-ordinator; develop registers for participants in educator training
- Identify and negotiate suitable venues for the educator training courses
- Arrange and run educator training courses to meet agreed schedule
- Support participants between sessions to ensure skills development is taking place
- Encourage and monitor skills cascading by Centres of Excellence
- Quality assure the learning process
- Update and maintain on-line register
