Bill Shaw awarded MBEPosted: Monday 25 June 2012
Industry pioneer Bill Shaw has been awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list for his outstanding 40 year contribution to hairdressing.
Bill is chairman and founder of Dimensions, the largest independent hairdressing company in Yorkshire.
It was in 1973 that Bill opened his first hairdressing salon in Barnsley. Salons in Leeds, Pontefract, Wakefield, Sheffield, Horsforth and Meanwood soon followed.
As Bill's reputation grew he branched out into training and opened a number of hairdressing and beauty academies throughout Yorkshire. Dimensions now runs 12 academies and has trained thousands of new stylists, many of whom have gone on to run their own salons. The company also works extensively in schools with 14 to 16-year-olds and with school leavers.
Over the past 25 years, Bill's influence in the hairdressing industry nationwide has become considerable, with him playing an active role in various trade and industry associations.
Bill is the longest serving director of Habia and has been involved in the organisation for over 20 years, currently holding the position of Treasurer and having previously held the position of Chairman.
Bill has also been Worthy Master of the Guild of Hairdressers at national level on two occasions and is currently the benefactor of the Guild, which is the oldest hairdressing organisation with a history dating back to 1886.
Bill is also a member of the Hairdressing Council, the UK's statutory body for the State Registration of hairdressers. Bill is currently Treasurer at the Hairdressing Council, a role he has enjoyed since completing his term of office as Chairman.
"I am overjoyed at the news I am to receive an MBE," said Bill today. "It came as a tremendous surprise and to receive an honour in the Queen's Jubilee year makes it even more special.
"Personally I'm delighted to have been put forward but I also think it's great recognition for the whole team at Dimensions.
"We work incredibly hard at Dimensions to give young people the chance to realise their ambitions. My career in hairdressing has been incredibly rewarding. I've loved and lived every minute and to be able to share that and encourage others is what it's all about."
"We'd also like to take this opportunity to say a very big thank you to all the employers and schools across the Yorkshire region and the local authorities in South and West Yorkshire who work with us. Without them, there simply wouldn't be Dimensions training."
Bill's 40-strong team is the largest and most experienced group of hairdressing training professionals in Yorkshire.
Bill and his wife, Bernadette, are looking forward to their trip to London, although a date has yet to be arranged for the Investiture.
